Have you ever had a friend over and wanted to play some Call of Duty online but found it to be a hassle tossing over the controller every round? Well, we got some great news for you, all you need is a second controller! That’s right, Call of Duty: Black Ops will be the first in the franchise to feature a two player splitscreen multiplayer as well as a offline combat training mode. But, a sacrifice seems to have been made, the co-op campaign known from Call of Duty: World at War will not be returning. Hit the jump for more info, pictures and sources.
One of the biggest gaming franchises has added a feature to their incoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops that is sure to grab the attention of those who might not of bought the game otherwise: two player splitscreen. Suspicions of local co-op online started coming about when videos featuring the create a class sections briefly went to the player match menu and below the player’s name was the option to “add controller for splitscreen”. But, that’s not all. To go on and say that the single image presented here is a surefire confirmation would be quite naive. To confirm things and add a bit of information, but also confirm a non-returning feature, is the Executive Producer working on Black Ops, Daniel Suarez. In an interview from several press, Dan Suarez spoke about a plethora of things, but, the one that stood out was the question if Black Ops would have splitscreen co-op. Here is a transcript of the interesting bits:

A. Dan Suarez: “Yes, you can play splitscreen on the combat training mode and on MP (multiplayer).”

As you can see, sadly, there will be no co-op campaign this year. Also, we’d like to mention that you can most definitely play online, if that wasn’t clear, as when he tries to demo what he said the path on screen goes (6:53 in video) “Multiplayer > Xbox Live > (choice) Player Match / Wager Match / Theater > (chooses) Player Match and splitscreen option is there”. This is not the first time its been in a call of duty game. Call of duty 3 had 4 player online splitscreen. I think its a shame that about 99% of games that come out nowadays dont have this feature. Back in the day it used to be all about the splitscreen. Today the only games worth playing with friends together is either rock band or Halo 3 (soon to be reach), Halo of course has always featured online splitscreen multiplayer, with guests even, no account required.

The split-screen online idea is BOSS, it’s a great feature for those who party locally like myself, what I really dislike though is the lack of 4 player support. I always loved the COD series for having 4 player splitscreen offline since my friends and I love mauling and trash talking each other in the same room, much different experience vs online. Hoping for continued 4 player local offline support games as well, what I liked about MW2 was leveling in offline and customizing classes, you can’t pre-make a class for everyone’s taste

I initially wrote Black Ops off after hearing there wasn’t a co-op campaign and cancelled my pre-order (then ordering Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: World at War). Great, now I have to cancel my orders again! Still, it makes me really happy that they haven’t completely dismissed co-op.

I think this game is going to be the best cod so far. Will easily beat MW2, it was a good game, besides the hackers and boosters. I like the idea of splitscreen multiplayer. I play with my little brother alot and this will give him tears of joy, also i just hope that black ops doesnt put in that stupid tactical insertion, that was the stupidest thing infinity ward could do for online gameplay. You can’t even get a free for all game without the annoying boosters in it. Other then that, this is going to be a fantastic game, cant wait.

I’m upset that there won’t be Co-op Campaign this year but to me it wasn’t a big deal anyways. here’s what some friends and I want to know; post PC days several ollege buddies and I picked-up the CoD series again and began hosting tournament nights and the like in our dorm. Now this never went over better than after the release of MW2 where ranking-up OFFLINE became possible. In the previous MW as well as World at War we, the gamers, had always been stuck using the crappy premade in-game sample classes while not logged-on and that is major BS, sorry. Now, we can all agree that the online gaming experience is amazing and CoD is the greatest, but lets never forget that sometimes dudes all over the planet just wanna crash with their buddies, drink some beer, and play some video games together without all the online hooplah! Besides, not everyone can afford High Speed these days and should the loyal customers really not be entitled to their full money’s worth from a game unless they have all the correct internet requirements? And good luck trying to organize a whole bunch of people’s connections that way from separate locations! If Black Ops refuses to offer offline splitscreen ranking matches then what is even the point of owning multiple controlers, I ask you?!
Yes, we all love us some online playtime but most of us also still have pals who come over just to relax and hang-out with us only – online play should not be the only way to get the most out of multiplayer, ya know what I’m saying?

This is fantastic news for me! I’ve actually just been looking at getting another Xbox 360 for when this comes out, till my partner pointed out that we hadn’t actually looked to see if Black Ops was splitscreen. I don’t mind doing campaign separately but, online, I love playing online together. And with MW2, we actually bought a second Xbox and the game twice (could have had 1 xbox version and 1 PS3 version but, we wanted to play together, so yeah got another Xbox – later sold it, hence why I was looking for another one now).
Now there’s no reason for me to delay getting it either
. Cuz they’ll be no arguing, or tossing the controller back n forth.

I don’t really care about the campaign coop being left out. The thing I dislike is that the Spec Ops hasn’t been included. I admit that I’m not a big online multiplayer type but I got addicted to playing the Spec Ops with my buddies. I haven’t decided yet but finding out that Spec Ops has been left out of this title may dissuade my purchase. If my vote counts at all, I would love to see this feature return in the next title.

Here is why Black Ops disappoints. If my memory serves me right, split screen multiplayer was already on COD3. But regardless, the things they added are much less than what they took away. The single player campaign had too many cutscenes and was short in gameplay. Multiplayer is the same as it always will be for all the kids. But the co-op, they might as well not have even bothered. The so-called co-op is just one mode of multiplayer (deathmatch) and you play against AI’s that you can rename with your friends list. What difference does it make what the AI’s are named!!?? Other than that, you get “zombie-mode” which is just deathmatch, except the AI’s don’t have guns and move slower. That’s it! They turned COD in Halo. Death match gets boring after a while. They didn’t even include any of the other multiplayer modes in the combat training mode. There are no objective based gameplay like capture the flag etc. or the quick blasts of spec-ops on MW2. Just deathwatch!

Black Ops co-op lets your friend join in almost any multiplayer game mode, and it has objective based game modes such as Capture the Flag, Headquarters, Demoliton, Search and Destroy, etc. Also, it implemented Wager Match game modes, 4 new game modes to the CoD franchise that allow you to gamble your CoD points for the chance of higher rewards! Also, Zombie mode uses special AI with the inclusion of reappearing dogs, crawling torsos, etc. While Wager mode can’t have your friend with you, almost all the game modes are available for split screen. Certainly not ‘just deathmatch’. I don’t know what game you were playing, I speculate it wasn’t CoD: Black Ops.

Javi- All those modes are multiplayer. Not co-op VS AI. In combat training it is only deathmatch. Split screen is not rhe same as online co-op.

Heather – No co-op campaign isn’t available on this game, even though the prepress suggested this. Considering that Treyarch did WAW which did have co-op campaign, it should have been doable technically, but they said it didn’t work for the storyline, which are flashbacks from 1 character.

That doesn’t make much sense, a 2nd player can be anyone at any time, they can even be killed off at the end of one part of the game and reintroduced as a different playable character in the next part and still keep the story flowing.
When you escape from jail the second player can be another escapee.
When you attack the missile/rocket, the second player can be another random soldier.
The second player doesn’t even need an identity.
Now I can see some problems with scripted events like where platforms have to break while you’re on them and how to get both players on the same platform so they can fall at the same time and not have one sitting safely up on solid ground. But personally those types of things irritate me, especially when you look around and find ways to completly and safely avoid the pitfall but for some reason jumping those 4 feet to another easily acessible ledge is an insta kill.

So far I’ve only enjoyed playing the zombies game, but why only 2 players?
I want 4 players in the same room vs Everything the computer can throw at us!!!
The single player game is buggy.
There is a point in the game where a computer player jumps off a bridge down at me in a trence and the screen said I had to press a certain button, and no matter how fast I pressed it the guy wouldn’t stop choking me and so now I’m stuck. I tried all 5 of my controllers thinking it might have been a controller issue but it is not.

The reason it has 3 or a 4 and I’m assuming you mean on ps3 network, it is cause they’re using controller 3 or 4 Im not positive on this but that would be my best guess…

Alright so the split-screen in Black-Ops is all fun and games but it takes away from the over-all camera radius and sight distance unless you have an overly sized t.v.. Even then, there are still parts in the game where it is just to hard to be an effective and accurate player. In my opinion the split screen they had in MW2 was exactly where it should of stayed. I do like the fact that you can play with a friend but when it takes away from the quality of game play it just doesn’t seem worth the time or effort to try and succeed in split-screen.

A further issue is that video games are normally serious as the name indicated with the principal focus on mastering rather than fun. Although, we have an entertainment element to keep the kids engaged, each game will likely be designed to focus on a specific group of skills or curriculum, such as numbers or science.
